“दशहरा दिवसे स्नानं दशपापहरं स्मृतम्।
दश दानं च तत्रोक्तं तत्कर्तव्यं विशेषतः॥”

According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Ganga Dussehra is celebrated every year on the Dashami (10th day) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon fortnight) in the month of Jyeshtha and nakshtra on this day is hasta.

As per religious beliefs, it was on this very day that Mother Ganga descended from the heavens to Earth.

There is a story that king Sagara of the IKSHAVKU DYNASTY performed ashwamedha yajna where Indra tried to create disturbance in completion as of the fact that he worries about his throne , all people of Dashmi born are very much worrying about what they have due to which they try to learn as much as possible in there life never stops at any stop.
Now coming at the same story Indra stole the horse hid it in the hermitage of Kapil Muni.
Sagara’s 60,000 sons went in search of the horse and, in a fit of arrogance, disrespected Kapil Muni, mistaking him for a thief. The sage, in anger, burnt them to ashes with his yogic gaze. Their souls remained unliberated, stuck between realms.

After a long time later, King Bhagirath, a descendant of Sagara, took a solemn vow to liberate the souls of his ancestors. He performed intense tapasya (penance) for thousands of years to invoke Ganga, the celestial river flowing in the heavens.

Pleased by his devotion, Ganga agreed to descend, but warned that her force would shatter the Earth. Bhagirath then prayed to Lord Shiva, who agreed to bear her mighty flow in his matted locks.

When Ganga descended from the heavens, she landed upon Lord Shiva’s head, who gently released her streams from his locks, allowing her to flow peacefully onto Earth.

ON THIS DAY it is believed that taking a dip in the holy Ganga removes ten types of sins, and performing ten types of donations brings immense spiritual merit and purity to one’s life.
