The Story of Budh Pradosh Vrat

A long time ago, there lived a poor Brahmin named Dharmanath in a town with his wife Sumati. Despite their poverty, they were deeply devoted to Lord Shiva. Unfortunately, they had no children, and this often filled their hearts with sadness. In hope of being blessed with a child, the couple took a vow to observe the Pradosh fast every Wednesday, known as Budh Pradosh Vrat.

They followed the vrat with great faith and discipline for several years. Eventually, by the grace of Lord Shiva, they were blessed with a radiant and intelligent son. The boy was humble, wise, and deeply spiritual from a young age — a true devotee of Lord Shiva.

As he grew older, one day he expressed to his father his wish to travel and learn more about the world. With his parents’ blessings, he set out on a pilgrimage. During his travels, he arrived at a kingdom where the king was looking for a suitable groom for his daughter. A royal astrologer had predicted that the princess would marry a young man who was a devotee of Lord Shiva and an observer of Budh Pradosh Vrat.

When the king met this young man and saw the signs of virtue and divinity in him, he was overjoyed and arranged for his daughter’s marriage with him.

After their marriage, the entire kingdom — which had once been troubled by wars, disease, and business losses — began to prosper. Peace and joy returned. Pleased with the boy’s qualities and wisdom, the king appointed him as his heir. As a ruler, the young man governed the kingdom with justice and devotion to Lord Shiva.

Later, he invited his parents to live with him in the royal palace. They were overwhelmed to see that the son they raised in a humble hut had now become a righteous and noble king. All this, they believed, was due to the blessings of Lord Shiva and the power of Budh Pradosh Vrat.
